Overview

This position is in the Electric Boat Welding Engineering Laboratory and will focus on supporting the Electric Boat welding procedure qualification and development program.

The Electric Boat Welding Laboratory operates a 5000 sq. ft. production space in the Groton CT Shipyard capable of performing all forms of welding used by Electric Boat. The Welding Laboratory is responsible for qualification and revision of all Electric Boat welding procedures, ferrous/non-ferrous metallurgical problem resolution, welding equipment evaluations, fabrication of production/design mock-ups, welding consumable and material evaluation, testing and quality assurance.

This position will focus on the following:

  • Development and qualification of structural and pipe welding procedures in accordance with ship and fabrication specification requirements.
  • Responsible for the quality and operability of welding procedures with respect to weld metal mechanical properties, weld quality, equipment reliability, and clarity of welder/operator instructions.
  • Technical support with regards to welding procedure specification selection, applicability and qualification requirements based on construction conditions and requirements.
  • Providing subject matter expertise on all welding processes and techniques, welding procedure qualification, welding equipment, and ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgical issues related to welding and welding consumables.
  • Development and communication of technical assessments of hardware based on fundamental welding, materials and engineering principles, data, and experience with respect to Welding Procedures.
  • Development and communication of specification interpretations as they relate to the welding program and welding procedure qualifications.
  • General support of NAVSEA, International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and internal Electric Boat audits as they relate to Welding Procedures and Technique Sheets.

Additional opportunities and functions of the Welding Engineering Laboratory include:

  • Performance and support of investigations to evaluate and adjudicate metallurgical, weld quality and workmanship issues as well as interpretations, deviations, or non-conformances to welding procedures, qualification requirements, specifications, and general work practice requirements.
  • Serve as a technical project lead on in-house and externally funded projects with respect to performance, process improvement or cost reduction efforts.
  • Development and completion of test programs to evaluate and/or characterize production conditions, technical requirements and current shipyard materials, processes and welding consumables.
  • Preparation of technical reports as a result of testing, and investigations.
  • Performance of quality assurance testing, root cause investigations, and engineering evaluations to support production welding consumables and adjudication of deviations and non-conformances to technical requirements.
  • Conducting welding consumable manufacturer audits.
  • Review and disposition of vendor information request associated with welding consumables.
  • Support of Construction, Engineering and Design efforts through fabrication of production and design mockups to ensure shipyard viability and service performance with respect to mechanical properties and weld quality.
  • Evaluation and/or development of existing and new welding equipment for established welding processes, welding methods, techniques, and procedures.
  • Development and Engineering support for government letters for approval of interpretations, deviations.

Responsibilities

  • Familiarity or experience with basic arc welding processes
  • Demonstrated fundamentals in Engineered problem solving, and the ability to learn, develop, and understand complex technical information.
  • Team player, comfortable working and communicating with all levels
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to write test plans, technical reports and other correspondence

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor of Science or higher in Engineering
  • 5-9 years of experience in the Engineering, Quality, or Welding industry
  • Project management experience
  • Prior experience with welding, quality, or mechanical testing procedure development, qualification, or validation

Preferred:

  • Bachelor of Science or higher in Metallurgy/Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Engineering (focus on metals as opposed to non-metallics), Welding Engineering or equivalent engineering field
  • Welding Procedure Qualification development and review experience
  • Qualification and Fabrication of pipe and structure, Tech Pub 248, Tech Pub 1688, Tech Pub 278, AWS, and ASM
  • Experience in the support of structural or piping welding applications
  • Experience in an industrial environment, shipbuilding, or other heavy fabrication
  • Mechanical aptitude and hands-on laboratory experience
